How we are building pathways to end child hunger

BY GEMMA DEVANEY IN NEWS - POSTED ON 02/06/2016

As Premier Guarantee has grown we have never forgotten our roots as a local company based in Birkenhead, Wirral. Our head office has been based in the town for nearly 15 years, with many of our head office staff centered in the town or surrounding areas. That is why when picking our corporate charities it was important to us to pay back to our local community for all the years of support it has given us.

‘Feeding Birkenhead’ stood out to us as a project we needed to support as soon as we heard about the life changing work it is undertaking.

Developed by Birkenhead MP, Frank Field, after a national inquiry into hunger, it aims to aid in relief and prevention of child hunger in the town.

Child hunger isn’t just occurring in underdeveloped countries, it’s surprising to realise it is closer to your doorstep than you might think. In Birkenhead alone over 42% of families live in poverty with many children receiving their only hot meal of each day through free school meals. This means that during the school holidays some children may not be receiving any hot meals at all.

Feeding Birkenhead aims to resolve this by setting up projects in Birkenhead and its surrounding areas to fill this gap in provision. They include free breakfast clubs, communal cooking and eating courses, physical play sessions with lunch provided, and lunchbox distribution sessions.

To aid in fundraising for this inspirational campaign, each month Premier Guarantee head office  employees ditch the ties and office suits for our ‘non-uniform day’. Money is raised through donations to take part in the day as well as raffles and bake sales. In our latest charity drive we raised £855 and here is how it was used by the projects:

•    1 sports cage and four sports coaches employed for 1 week holiday camp
•    Feeding 98 children over a three day holiday camp
•    5 mornings of breakfast clubs for children and 5 evening family cooking sessions
•    We also provide CV training, Interview practice and work shadowing opportunities for children receiving educational support from this project.

It is amazing how far donations can go to help our next generation. If you would like to help this cause in anyway contact fieldf@parliament.uk
